Fioricet and Esgic are brand names of a combination of butalbital (a barbiturate), acetaminophen and caffeine which is indicated for the treatment of tension.

Per DEA listing, Fioricet is a DEA exempt prescription product. However, Fioricet is listed as Schedule III in five states (MD, GA, UT, FL and NM). Confusion has arisen about the controlled substance status of this medication. There is no logical rationale for why this is exempted from controlled substance scheduling, but it has been postulated that the concentration of butalbital with the acetaminophen (and caffeine) allows this to be an analgesic combination that the DEA allows exemption to.

When I first began taking it, it made me overly talkative and more alert. The only way it works for me now is to break open the capsule onto my tongue then swallow it with a beverage, otherwise the capsule does not disintegrate quickly enough have any efficacy whatsoever (although I have not noticed any difference since the acetaminophen was reduced by 25mg). I al. The previous formulation was a quick release tablet, but the new one is a capsule. I even placed one in a glass of vinegar (closest thing I could think of to mimick stomach acid) and it took nearly 8 hours to disintegrate enough for the medicine to come out.
